I live with my partner Ray Garcia and our daughter Rivala, age 12.  Rivala was a footling breech c-section, but prenatal care with the midwives was enough to transform my approach to life and to my body. Ray and I home school Rivala, a budding artist and nature lover.  I have worked for non profits all my life, and ran a grant writing business in Taos from 1996 through 2001.  I believe non-profits are the seeds of a rational society to come.  I write poems (one book so far, A Bee In The Sheets,) have a vegetable and flower garden, and teach co-counseling, a peer counseling/international social change movement.  I love being part of the giant extended Garcia clan, belonging to the amazing progressive Taos community, and working for the most heart-centered, long-lived non profit in town.

I am a stay-at-home mom, playing with my daughter in the sunlight, and painting solo in the moonlight. I received a BFA in illustration from the Kansas City Art Institute, designed greeting cards at Hallmark for 7 years, and have been freelancing since 2003. I am an author/illustrator of children’s books, My Travelin’ Eye (April 2008) and Same, Same, but Different (2011), both published by Henry Holt and Company.  I am also a board member and advocate of Artseva.org in India, a gardener, mountain-wanderer, aspiring yogini, and a big kid.

The Northern New Mexico Midwifery Center is a non-profit organization located in the small mountainous town of Taos, New Mexico. The three midwives (CPM’s, LM’s) and their apprentices service a community of many diverse cultures including Latinas, Native Americans and Anglos. The Northern NM Midwifery Center offers its services over a wide ranging area of Northern New Mexico & Southern Colorado, including Taos, Española, Santa Fe & Los Alamos.

The practice is unique in the United States in that it is the only community in the United States where nearly 30% of all births occur naturally outside of the hospital. The concepts of self-care, client freedom of choice, and informed consent are the cornerstones of this practice.

The midwives are deeply committed to creating an environment where families can safely bring their babies into the world with love, respect and honor. We believe the Midwifery Model of Care is the optimal way to improve the health status of mothers and babies and thereby reduce infant and maternal morbidity and mortality. We want Northern New Mexico & Southern Colorado to be the safest place to be a woman!
